Maggie and Maddy Coloring Contests and Writing Contests

Creating a book about Napa, meant more to us than just creating a book and having it sold at a book store. While our original idea came from creating a tourist souvenir, we realized that this book was for locals to enjoy just as much as it was for tourists.

We wanted to share this book with the local children, so we went to the Napa Valley Unified School District, and arranged to provide donated copies of “Maggie and Maddy: Adventures in Napa Valley” to each school library.

In addition to the donated books, we also provided “Teachers Guides“, and held Coloring Contests for the Kindergarten and First Graders, and Writing Contests for the Second and Third Graders. Each school had their own contests, so that several kids would win a signed copy of the book.

Maggie and Maddy in St. Helena Star Newspaper

Amy and Kyle Goleno, authors of “Maggie and Maddy Adventures in Napa Valley” were in a picture that was in the St. Helena Star Newspaper the first week of April.

The picture showed the authors conducting a writing workshop for second grade students at St. Helena Primary School.

The students had a lot of fun coming up with their own ideas for their own book. The librarian is having each student create a page of their own adventure, and all the children’s pages will be put together to create a book that will be available for checkout in their school library.

It was really uplifting for us to see the students so excited about our visit.

School Assembly at St. Helena Primary School

We spent the day, Wednesday, March 13th 2013, at St. Helena Primary School talking with the students about how we came up with the idea to write our children’s book (while walking on Main St. in Saint Helena), as well as the process to have a book published.

It was a little nerve racking to tell our story to such a large audience for the first time, especially since the day before we came, the students were treated to an assembly given by Francis Ford Coppola.

We then projected the book onto a big screen and read the book to the kids. They had a great time seeing the brightly colored illustrations blown up so large, and hearing us read the book. At the end of the assembly they got to ask their own questions.

After the assembly we did four workshops, each of the second grade classes, that consisted of brainstorming sessions for them to write their own adventure book. The children came up with some great stories, and we are excited to someday see their finished books.

We finished the day signing books for all the children that had pre-ordered books! We have to thank Lisa Montelli and Principal Hoskins for hosting us, and all the teachers for a wonderful time.
